I love doing little kid crafts, and this is one of my favorites. I made my first macaroni snowflake when I was seven - it was silver and had red glitter. It twinkled merrily from my parents' tree for the next twenty Christmases until an unfortunate encounter with a wagging tail sent it flying to the floor. It was smashed, and my mother was disconsolate. To cheer her up, I offered to make her a new, better macaroni snowflake ornament ... and I did. I actually made 80. I gave most of them away as hostess gifts, tied to bottle of wine, etc. This year, I decided it was time for another batch.
It's pretty fun. I came up with nine different shapes using just three types of macaroni - fiori, small shells, and wagon wheels. The best part is that you can have the unused materials for lunch.
After four or five coats of spray paint and a healthy dose of glitter, people hardly believe they were once humble ronies. They are lovely as ornaments, but I'm thinking they would be nice in a garland, or even a mobile ...

These are so cute--what a fun project. I love little kid crafts around the holidays.
Amazing! You're a genius!
Or maybe just a little crazy : )
these are ridiculous! in the most fantastic way, of course! beautiful...
Zowie! My glitter-loving heart is singing the nicest noodle snowflake song.
i am fortunate enough to have one of these, and i have to say, it is ridiculously cute. i hung it on the wall next to my counter at the store and MANY people have complimented its general cuteness and don't even recognize it immediately as pasta.
These are so cute - what a wonderful idea! And your tree looks so good!
Wait.. so, do you glue them? What kind of glue do you use? Why are they in a box in photo #2? They are so cute, I want to make some!
Your last two posts really put me in the holiday spirit. Thanks!
Hi, Karly -
I glue them first, using regular craft glue like Aleen's tacky glue, then they are in the box because I spray paint them - even I'm not crazy enough to paint them by hand. I use glossy white spray paint. You have to do many light coats because if you get them too wet, the macaroni will start to lose its shape. I use the box to control the spray from the paint. You have to shake them gently after each coat of paint to make sure they don't stick to the box. I end up painting both sides, and each side gets 4-5 light coats of paint. Once they are primed, then I liberally glitter.
Ta da!
Next year I am thinking a chromatic set. ... or maybe ombre.
OMG If you do ombre macaroni snowflakes, I am flying up to Cleveland!
And I kinda think I was craft deprived considering I've NEVER seen this done before. Where have I been??!!! Absolutely beautiful.
I am totally making these.
Wow these are amazing!! Why didn't we get to make anything like this when i was in school?
Brilliant! Thinking THIS will keep the varmints busy for awhile...
Of course you would. You are a crafting genius. These are absolutely adorable and far cuter than any homemade ornament we made as kids! I think our fanciest ones were reindeer candy canes :)
And how very sweet that you started this in order to replace the broken one for your mom. Thanks for sharing, these are great!
these are so neat! our tree is lacking in the ornament department so i know how i might be spending my monday off.
Loved this idea so much added it to my holiday love section on the right side of my blog!
Thanks, Diana!
Oh, my goodness! Those are incredible. Oh, I so want to make some now!
oh, oh

Hello, those are utterly stupendous! Perfect craft to entertain the kiddos, I must try this. Thanks so much for sharing the idea. You have a lovely blog!
