Rhoda Dawson: Komitik and Dogs hooked rug. 1930-1935.

From the catalog entry at the V & A:

Rhoda Dawson moved to Newfoundland from England in 1930 and became part of an arts and crafts group selling rag rugs made of dyed silk stockings ... the stockings were cut from the top to the toe, in a spiral, creating a strip about one inch wide. Most often they were crocheted or knitted into rugs, occasionally braided. Because stockings act like yarn and have great resilience, any yarn rug pattern can be used. This rug shows two dogs, one black, one brown, pulling a komitik (wooden sled).

The famous stairway carpet embroidered with Tilly Losch's footprints at Edward James' West Dean House. During their marriage, she ran up the stairs with wet feet and he was so taken with the pattern that he had a carpet made with her footprints woven into the fabric.

The marriage didn't last and after their divorce he supposedly replaced the carpet with one that had his dog's footprints on it instead.
