Chairs by Charles Rohlfs:
Desk chair, 1898-1899.
Rocking chair, 1899.
Tall back rocking chair, 1901.
Corner chair, 1901.
Barrel chair. 1902.
The Met has a fantastic exhibition on Rohlfs up right now (my friend Abbey worked on it). He only made furniture for ten years, but his designs were influential.
The first chair pictured may be my favorite in the show - the carvings are thought to mimic the cellular structure of oak, which the chair is made of (photos of Rohlfs' studio show a microscope on the work bench).
There are so many beautiful patterns that I am going back today to do some drawings.
